Our Stories Our Songs by Deborah Ellis

African Children Talk About Aids (By Deborah Ellis)

Poverty
  • The 200 richest people in the world have more money than the poorest 582,000,000 people combined.
  • One-sixth of the people in the world are malnourished.
  • Between 1985 and 2000, over 7 million African farmers died of AIDS.
  • Most African countries pay up to three times more on international debt repayment than they do on health care.
  • Hunger weakens the body, making it vulnerable to illness. This makes it harder to stay strong if someone is HIV positive.
  • HIV infection rates are rising among African American and Hispanic people living in poverty.
  • Living in poverty forces people to make unsafe choices in order to survive or feed their children.
  • Most of the 42 million people with HIV/AIDS live in countries with a lot of poverty, 29 million in Sub-Saharan Africa.
  • It costs more to care for and bury someone with AIDS than most rural African families make in a year.

Poverty has become a major problem. Its bigger than what people perceive. Its the responsibility of every person to help the needy. I came across a community http://www.orkut.co.in/Community.aspx?cmm=47234928 which is about The United Nations' campaign to End Poverty by 2015. The campaign revolves around 8 major goals which, if accomplished, would ensure eradication of poverty.

I truly agree with consciousness awakening part of the post.!
People rating poverty as poor from their hearts is the first step towards any revolution to be taking place..

The Millennium Development goals of the UN..works this principle..!
@ ayesha i m also a member of this community and glad to be a part of it .

It makes me ill to know that third world countries are unable to take care of themselves because all the money they make, goes to the US in paying back their loans to us. ONE.org is a great org that is trying to take care of extreme poverty. Also, more than HALF the world lives on $1 a day.... OR LESS. We are such a spoiled, rich, Paris Hilton-y nation.

Welcome to our site! We hope you enjoy the information we share during our adoption journey. As we document this wild ride to bringing home our Ethiopian children, we hope you'll fall in love with this beautiful country as we have.
